Internet Marketing – The Age of New Media

Internet Marketing – The Age of New Media

The internet has opened up new doors to the world of marketing. The field of marketing focuses on the communication of the product/service to the customer with the ultimate goal of convincing them to purchase your product or service. When we say internet marketing, all that really means is that there are now many different avenues to marketing your product or service through the internet. There are a lot of different options, so it is easy to get overwhelmed. But the reassuring thing is that you can use tactics from one of these avenues in other areas as well.

There’s a lot going on when it comes to the internet. There is sometimes an overload of information or pushing of products through advertising, and certain markets can easily become saturated. The most important thing to do from the beginning is to learn and understand what is going on in the digital world and how other businesses and entrepreneurs are creating a space for themselves and thriving.

After you’ve done a bit of research, its time to learn the different lanes that make up the highway of internet marketing.  Take them one at a time, and learn the best tactics and approaches to reach your target audience. Each lane offers its own advantages in reaching your audience.

  • Affiliate Marketing

This is, in it its simplest form, a shout out! By promoting other people’s products or services, you can earn a commission. This is a process also known as referrals. We see this happening more and more on different social media platforms with new “social media celebrities” that are promoting the latest TeaTox, makeup, or weight loss product. They often earn a small commission for every product that is sold through their promotion. Think of sponsorships that athletes receive from major retailers. It is a win-win situation for the one doing the promoting and the company or product seeking the promotion.

  • Email Marketing

One of the more traditional forms of internet marketing is email marketing. It is a way to convey a message to your audience via email. By capturing the email addresses of your audience, or even potential customers, you create an avenue of communication to promote your products or services, or to simply just keep in touch and keep them posted on what is new! Most marketers create strong campaigns around email communication, which normally include a plan for consistent emails. The key to a successful email marketing campaign is consistency. Do not over do it, and if you have to stick to specific days and times to send out your message, then do so.

  • Social Media Marketing

This is one of the newer, but relatively easier, approaches at trying to market your target audience. It is basically just gaining traffic and attention by using social media sites and accounts. Social media sites are where people go to interact in different platforms and manners using their individual accounts. Each one has a unique approach for each user. For example, Facebook started out as a way for college students to connect but has then since grown into the pioneer platform that allows users to share photos, videos, and write posts at unlimited lengths. Twitter on the other hand allows its users to create posts and updates that are limited to 140 characters. Instagram is a platform specifically designed around sharing photos and videos. Having an effective social media marketing strategy is important for any successful business in today’s world. Most of these platforms also have advertising slots, as well as provide data analytics to see how your accounts are performing.

  • Blogging

This is a tried and true method to the world of internet marketing. If you want to be known as the go-to resource for information on a certain topic, product or idea, then creating a strong blog presence is definitely one way to go. People search for blogs to provide them with information or news on certain subjects or products. The more successful blogs have established themselves as the prime resource for information to their specific markets or touching on niche topics. It is an easy way for anyone with little internet experience to begin an online marketing campaign. There is just one caveat: it takes a lot of time and consistency to create a successful blog and to move your domain up the Google search ranks.

  • Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of maximizing the amount of visitors to your website by making sure that it is one of the first results on a search engine. Most of the traffic on your website will be driven by a search engine like Google, Yahoo! or Bing. Search engines are one of the first stops for internet users to find a specific page, product or service. The way to effectively do this is make sure that your site uses keywords that match up with what users are searching for through these specific engines. There are plenty of free online videos and tutorials to help you understand SEO in detail and apply all of the necessary tricks to make sure that your page starts to creep up on the search result lists.

These are just some of the major avenues in todays world of internet marketing. Keep in mind that they all work hand-in-hand and can help support the other avenues efforts. If you are blogging, make sure to try and use SEO best practices. Insert keywords and clickable links when possible to increase your SEO. When it comes to email marketing, link your readers to your social media pages. Social media marketing campaigns can be enhanced using affiliate marketing practices. Most importantly, don’t forget to do your research. In order to best target your audience through online marketing, you have to know where the majority of your audience is and how exactly they behave. Certain age groups and demographics use certain platforms and resources more frequently than others. By understanding how internet marketing works, and pairing that with your understanding of your target audience behaviors, you are guaranteed a strong internet marketing campaign.
